I wonder if the change being always in the one direction becomes an issue? From what you would ave been classified as at birth to some new construct. When that new construct proves unsatisfactory, then the 'do over' is very hard. In other words, when people make the first change then that becomes locked in. But it is fluid, right? Not easy.
